MG is a British automotive brand founded by Cecil Kimber in the 1920s, originating as a sales promotion side project of Morris Garages in Oxford, where Kimber modified standard Morris cars and added the MG name. The M.G. Car Company Limited was formally incorporated on 21 July 1930, producing sports cars and gaining prominence under Kimber’s leadership until his dismissal in 1941. Over the decades, MG underwent multiple ownership changes, including mergers with the British Motor Corporation, British Leyland, and the Rover Group, with MG Rover entering receivership in 2005. The brand and its assets were acquired by China’s Nanjing Automobile Group, which merged into SAIC Motor in 2007, resuming MG production in China and relaunching models like the MG6 in the UK in 2011. Historically, MG production evolved from small-scale coachbuilt cars in Oxford to a dedicated factory in Abingdon, establishing its reputation as a maker of iconic British sports cars, and the brand continues today under Chinese ownership.
